Voices of Afghanistan - Sakhi Ensemble

Voices of Afghanistan – Sakhi Ensemble

Harmonium (that's the box with a keyboard and enclosed bellows): Khalil Ragheb
Tula (flutelike instrument): Pervez Sakhi

A ghazal is a "a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain." (Wikipedia) It originated in Sufi mysticism--the aspect of Islam that Islamic fundamentalists most despise. This is the kind of music that the Taliban banned during its reign in Afghanistan.
Tabla (pair of tuned drums side by side): Ezmarai Aref
Doyra (single drum): Abbos Kosimov (from Uzbekistan; all the others are from Afghanistan)

This music is very closely related to Indian music, both in style and in instrumentation.

The group, called the Sakhi Ensemble, had CDs you can buy, and Kosimov has his own CD as well (he also performs with the group Masters of Percussion).
